Foreword
Purpose
Getting Started On Your Web Site accompanies the NZ Government Web Standards and Recommendations v1.0.
The purpose of this document is to provide information and guidance to agencies that require foundation assistance in the design, development and operational processes of their web sites. It does not mandate any standards or recommendations; it is here to help.
This is very much an abridged overview of the design, development and operational process associated with web sites. It is not the authoritative word on the topic and recognises that there are many ways to approach this.
Audience
This document is primarily intended for staff within NZ government agencies that have a whole or part responsibility in one or more of the design, development and operation for one or more web sites under ownership of their agency, and who have little or no prior knowledge in the area of web site planning, design, development and day-to-day operations.
It is intended to assist such staff members when they ask a question like “where do I start?”
If you are considering having your web site(s) designed, developed and/or hosted by a third party (i.e., outside of your agency), there is a separate document of guidelines provided for this. Refer to the document NZ Government Web Site Outsourcing Guidelines.
Current version
The current version of the Web Site Design, Development and Operational Fundamentals is Version 1.0, last revised on March 2007.

Suggestions will be evaluated and may be included in future revisions.
All major revisions to the Web Site Design, Development and Operational Fundamentals supersede earlier revisions.
