NZGLS metadata standard - Home page

NZGLS at a glance:

The NZGLS metadata standard is the official New Zealand Government standard for creating discovery-level metadata (see Cabinet Circular CO (02) 3). The standard is based closely on two well established standards: the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set and the Australian Government Locator Service.

Current version of the standard

Element Set 2.1 is the current version of the NZGLS metadata standard [published March 2004].

Usage Guide

The NZGLS Usage Guide provides guidelines in applying the NZGLS metadata standard.

Maintenance of the standard

The management of the standard is overseen by Archives New Zealand as custodian, with support from an expert NZGLS Working Group consisting of representatives from across government.

Changes from NZGLS version 2.0 to NZGLS Metadata Element Set version 2.1

The primary difference is a change of format, there are minimal changes to the content. The definitions of the standard are published as the "Element Set", with a separate document containing the usage and implementation material.

The element definitions have been reworded to precisely match Dublin Core (the standard upon which NZGLS is based), but the meaning has not changed.

  • Date - a qualifier 'available' has been added for consistency with DC, but generally it is better to give this information in the Availability element.
  • Mandate - the qualifier 'courtCase' has been renamed 'case' to be consistent with the Australian usage.
  • The format for entering personal names has been clarified as {last name}, {first name}.
  • Source - the guidance on this element has been changed to encourage the use of Relation instead of this element.

NZGLS Agent and NZGLS Availability Encoding Schemes have been combined as NZGLS Agent, and the scheme has been clarified.
