e-GIF Management Committee Summary 21 February 2008

1. Leadership in e-GIF: State Services Commissioner

The State Services Commissioner’s presentation to the Committee focussed on the leadership role played by the Committee, noting how it is positioned in between the leadership offered by the State Services Commission and the agencies to which it provides support. Since adoption of its revised terms of reference, the Committee has undertaken to keep track of a number of large projects and address major issues. The Commissioner noted that all the projects are of major relevance for a whole range of reasons. He talked of the challenge of maintaining confidence, the importance of reducing costs and therefore increasing value for money, as well as the importance of identity management.

2. Information Systems Strategic Plan: Border Sector Group

The Committee discussed Border Sector Information Systems including structure, scope and scale, locations, interactions between industry and government agencies and current issues.

It was suggested that the Committee could help support the project by:

  • Providing strong leadership at a high level, especially around some aspects of Governance.
  • That there is a need to start discussions early about the mechanisms that maintain the narrow focus of the public service, how these can be changed and what can be gained from maintaining the status quo.

3. Continuum Standards Update: Archives New Zealand

The presentation focussed on the Public Records Act Recordkeeping Standards Programme.

It was suggested that the Committee could help support the project by:

  • Investigating / discussing whether this issue is an IT issue or an Information Management issue.
  • Government agencies have similar challenges with security.

4. Geospatial Update: New Zealand Geospatial Office

The presentation covered strategy goals, Governance arrangements, the draft work programme under development and approach being taken.

It was suggested that the Committee could help support the project by:

  • helping to engage the Chief Executives.
