Data Management Policy and Standards

Overview

The Data Management policies and standards were developed to assist and improve access to information across government.

These standards describe generic corporate data management practices, not specific technology approaches. They were developed by a working group, assembled in 1999 from interested government agencies.

Guidance on Use

The NZ Government Information Systems and Data Management policies and standards now have a new status with regard to the e-government programme:

  1. The e-Government Interoperability Framework (e-GIF) applies in instances of interoperability (ie shared information, technology and business processes)
  2. The Information Systems and Data Management policies and standards provide good practice guidance for internal aspects of agency information and technology management.

These standards are recommended for public service departments and contracted agencies handling Crown data and document assets.

They are optional but highly desirable for State Owned Enterprises and other organisations funded by the Crown, particularly where information needs to be exchanged.

The Policies and Standards should be regarded as living documents, to be improved by regular reviews based on feedback from the Public Service, legislative changes and developments in international standards.
