newzealand.govt.nz - the New Zealand government portal

logo of the all-of-government portal.

The newzealand.govt.nz is a first stage of a major transformation of how citizens access and transact with government. newzealand.govt.nz provides structured access to information and services provided by government agencies. It is a convenient way of finding out about government information and services in one place, without having to know which New Zealand government agency provides them. It provides an alternative to across-the-counter and telephone contact with government.

newzealand.govt.nz contains information about the services of most government agencies. This is supported by online information, such as links to web pages and documents as well as agency contact details. Also, there is information about ways to obtain forms and brochures that are only available in paper format.

Government agencies work closely with the State Services Commission to describe their services consistently in a way that is useful for people. New services are regularly added and the core local government services are also listed.

The Metalogue database backs up newzealand.govt.nz. It has been developed by the State Services Commission and is used to record the information that is fed through to newzealand.govt.nz. The information on newzealand.govt.nz is updated each night.

A log analyser has been built to assist agencies and the State Services Commission to develop a clear picture of the way newzealand.govt.nz is being used.

Work is also under way on improving users' searching experience on newzealand.govt.nz. A search facility is a standard component of any web site, and is commonly the most popular navigation feature. Studies show users have high expectations of search facilities, but are often disappointed by their performance. This appears to be true of some users' experience of newzealand.govt.nz and other government websites. Improvement in this area is consistent with the State Services Commission's Development Goal of providing accessible state services, with no wrong doors, and with right doors in right places.
