e-GIF programme Update

The continuing evolution of the e-GIF

The State Services Commission (SSC) is currently undertaking the next steps in the continuing evolution of the E-government Interoperability Framework (e-GIF).

After 6 years and 8 updates to the original concept, the SSC is embarking on a 'from the ground up' refresh of the e-GIF. The number and type of available communication channels and information/data technologies has changed over the past 6 years, as has the way in which customers wish to work, communicate and interoperate with government.

The e-GIF is a collection of policies and standards endorsed for New Zealand government information technology (IT) systems. It has the following benefits:

  • Helps government agencies more easily work together electronically;
  • Makes systems, knowledge and experience reusable from one agency to another;
  • Reduces the effort required to deal with government online by encouraging consistency of approach.

The steward of the e-GIF is the State Services Commissioner, supported by the e-GIF Management Committee. Working groups recommend standards for inclusion in the e-GIF. The working groups consist of technical staff from agencies, some groups include IT vendor representatives. SSC is now stepping back and having a good look at the content, form, function, audience, message and communication channels of the current e-GIF, to see if any changes are needed to make sure that the e-GIF continues doing what it should, in the way it should and for the people it should into the future.

With that goal, SSC will soon be seeking feedback via a managed multi-channel consultation process on the current e-GIF framework, its contents, presentation, direction and more to aid in the review.

Key areas of work include:

The e-GIF standards are reviewed annually. A review cycle has recently ended, and a new cycle is in the planning stages. If you have comments or suggestions to assist in a review, please contact e-gif@ssc.govt.nz.
