New improved search for newzealand.govt.nz

The State Services Commission New Zealand has implemented an innovative new approach to search on New Zealand’s all-of-government web portal, newzealand.govt.nz using Vivisimo Velocity.
Laurence Millar, Deputy Commissioner Information and Communication Technologies, says search is one of the key components of Accessible State Services.
"Ensuring people can easily and conveniently access government information online is critical to improving New Zealander's experience of the State Services.
"The new search will provide the more than two million people who visit newzealand.govt.nz every year with a wide array of relevant search returns, from standard government web pages to news, images and more.
"SSC chose Vivisimo Velocity for its versatility; as well as providing relevant results it lets us add value to search results by spotlighting popular results and searching government information not available on Google, Yahoo or Live Search.
"Vivisimo includes its own search engine so in addition to indexing web pages it has a federated search solution that will include web results from Microsoft’s Live Search public index", Laurence Millar said.
Vivisimo software spotlights popular results, filters content and searches information that is not available through Live Search before clustering search results by topic and agency.
"It can also search documents within an agency’s Intranet from sources such as file shares, databases, content management systems, email servers and archives.
"SSC is the first New Zealand government organization to use the Vivisimo Velocity search platform but we have a syndicated agreement so other agencies can take advantage of the deal if they choose", Laurence Millar said.
Vivisimo became operational on newzealand.govt.nz on 30 June 2007.
