@your.service - the latest round up of e-government

E-government Update

Welcome to @your.service, a regular round up of e-government news from New Zealand and around the world.

We aim to reach a broad audience, including government people, suppliers of IT and telecommunications services, people in the community who are following the progress of e-government, as well as international audiences.

Issue 6 - September 2002

One of the features that sets government apart as a service provider is that you can’t shop around for government services. There is only one agency that issues passports and only one that collects your taxes. This alone makes government’s approach to online service delivery markedly different from that emerging in the private sector.

The soon to be launched government portal will surprise some people because it is built quite differently from many commercial sites. It has been designed from the outset to promote unimpeded access to public information. So even if you are using older technology, have limited bandwidth or an impairment, the design of the portal won’t stand in your way.

Not all information is public information. Personal information, like tax records, can be made accessible online, but only with appropriate safeguards. Just what people think is appropriate for personal secure access to some government services, will be discussed during public consultation later this year. Whatever solutions New Zealanders recommend, their design will still be accessible for everyone who can use the Internet – at home, work, in libraries, community spaces or Internet cafes.
