E-procurement and S.E.E. projects opt for short-term trials

May 2002

A pilot online purchasing system will be trialled in May and June. The pilot will provide agencies with a laboratory to test e-procurement in action and see how it meshes with current purchasing practice. The $250,000 Oracle-based system, to be developed by Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, will become operational in October if the pilot proves successful and agencies commit to the e-procurement system it. The system promises substantial benefits across government through easier purchasing and greater purchasing power.

The S.E.E. project is taking a similar approach to developing an all-of-government directory service. Using a low-cost open source directory, the S.E.E. team hope to learn some valuable lessons in building and using a directory service. The open-source approach means the team can focus on gaining practical experience before selecting a vendor to establish the all-of-government directory.

The S.E.E. directory is being implemented as a supporting component of S.E.E. Mail v2.

A review of current LDAP directory work, emphasising open source solutions, is available on the e-government website.
