Making the portal work for people
May 2002
Understanding the needs and perceptions of people using the government web portal is critical to its long-term success. And going out and asking people is the only way to find out.
The E-government Unit recently invited groups of people to talk about the early prototypes of the new portal and the use they might make of it in their daily lives. The diverse cross-section of New Zealanders included farmers, students and teachers, New Zealanders (and UK citizens) living in London, community groups and other organisations.
The groups confirmed the portal development team are on the right track. Keep it simple; keep it accurate and up to date; don't let government-speak get in people's way.
Some of the feedback will be used to refine the design of the first version of the portal. Other comments will undoubtedly influence the way the portal develops in the longer term.
And what are the topics people most consistently look to government for? Tax,
social welfare, health, education, employment and statistics. The most popular
category in the portal prototype? "Participate in Government", which
will let you find out more about how to get involved.
