Metalogue training underway

May 2002

Agency staff are now being trained to use the e-government metadata management facility or "Metalogue". The Metalogue is the electronic catalogue of government information and services that the public will explore through the government web portal. The catalogue has been built around the NZGLS metadata standard.

Agencies will be using the Metalogue to build on the information already collected on over 1000 government services in phase 1 of the e-services listing project.

The Metalogue has been designed to make it easy for agencies to create and maintain metadata records that comply with the NZGLS standard. Agencies are using a web-based application that provides help with the technical aspects of the standard and the ability to explore the subject and functions thesauri to look for terms that best describe their services.

Over 50 agencies, including all Public Service agencies, will be taking part in the first round of training before they begin adding to their metadata. For more information about the training sessions and access to the system, contact the Metalogue helpline (phone 04 495 2846 between 9am and 5pm or email metalogue@ssc.govt.nz).

All metadata will be reviewed by agency staff and the portal development team to check that it will be helpful to people who may not necessarily understand which department deals what service or the way any particular agency chooses to describe what it offers.
