Information and Data
Open Government Information and Data Re-use Project
The Open
Government Information and Data Re-use Project at the State Services
Commission is developing an approach for opening up New Zealand's
non-personal government information and data.
It is considering how to help create the conditions that encourage use and re-use of open New Zealand government data for the benefit of the New Zealand economy and New Zealanders, whilst ensuring the integrity and privacy of personal information.
The first step of this work is the release of our Promoting Government Information and Data Re-use Background Paper. This paper summarises the current New Zealand government information environment and describes key international government information policies and initiatives. It then proposes a programme to work with suppliers and users of non-personal government information and data to promote and enable its re-use.
The outcome of this work would be:
- an approach for opening up New Zealand's public information and data, and
- a report on the impact of this approach on the Policy Framework for Government-Held Information
The State Services Commission wants to work together with suppliers and users of non-personal government information and with people who use it now or wish to re-use it to create new information or products. We want to know about any issues you are facing. We also want to understand what is involved in providing data in readily usable or re-usable formats.
If you want to get involved in our New Zealand work or have some comments you wish to make, please email opendata.reuse@ssc.govt.nz or place a comment on the SSC's In Development blog - http://blog.e.govt.nz/index.php/2008/12/16/promoting-government-information-and-data-re-use/.

Update
The presentation "Open Data, Open Government" of September 2009 provides an update on the approach to making non-personal data and information from New Zealand government agencies more freely available.
This is slightly modified from that presented at the Government Recordkeeping Forum on 7 September 2009.
