Definition: A reference to a related resource.
Obligation: Optional.
What is this element?
Relation identifies a relationship between the resource being described and another resource. Refinements specify the type of relationship between the two resources.
This provides a way to identify information (documents) necessary for using a service (including prerequisites) and supports the linking or integration of a number of services.
Users can then follow through trails of interrelated resources, including the various steps in a service. It is also useful for:
- linking items in multiple parts;
- different versions of the same resource; and
- items available in multiple formats.
So that the nature of the relationship may be understood it is recommended that you use the appropriate "refinement". Reference the related resource by its Identifier and/or Title, as appropriate.
When describing an Agency, use Relation.replaces to reference previous agencies that have been (in at least significant part) incorporated into the current agency.
Use this element to describe relationships that are significant from the searcher's point of view - not all relationships.
When you note a relationship, as good practice, please take the time to make sure that the other resource also has the relationship recorded.
Relation and other elements
Use Relation with the appropriate refinement such as: isBasedOn, isVersionOf, or replaces instead of Source.
Qualifiers
Refinements
To give the context of the relationship, use one of the refinements. There are seven pairs of relationship terms - a 'to' and a 'from'. Choose one or other of the pair - otherwise it won't make sense. Reference the related resource by its Identifier and/or Title.

|

|
isReplacedBy |
The described resource is supplanted, displaced, or superseded by the referenced resource. |

|

The described resource pre-existed the referenced resource, which is essentially the same intellectual content presented in another format. |
|
isBasisFor |
The described resource pre-existed the referenced resource, which is a performance, production, derivation, translation, or interpretation of the described resource. |
|

Encoding Schemes
URI - Uniform Resource Identifier for online or electronic resources. This includes the other schemes "Uniform Resource Locator" (URL) and "Uniform Resource Names" (URN).
Enter a URI in full, i.e. you must include the part before the colon as it identifies the scheme being used, e.g. http://.
See: RFC2396: Uniform Resource Identifiers (URI): Generic Syntax, August 1998 http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2396.txt
