3. LINZ Geospatial Metadata Standards Project
Janine Delaney joined the meeting to report back on the LINZ Geospatial Metadata Standards Project. Janine attended a meeting hosted by LINZ on 5 December, which was intended to get a range of agencies together to share information about geospatial metadata activity, prior to the project commencing properly.
A number of scoping issues have still to be resolved including the degree of implementation work to be included in the scope. At this stage, the aim is to produce a Whole-of-Government geospatial metadata standard, to be incorporated within the e-GIF, and also to be used by Local Government. The ISO19115 standard is to be used as a central plank, and it is expected that work will involve the identification of a subset of perhaps 35 elements from the ISO set which are critical for discovery. Other elements used for interoperability, fitness for purpose analysis, or data management may subsequently be investigated by particular sectors. LINZ is coordinating work in the initial stage.
The project is scheduled to deliver its final product around July 2003. The meeting sought nominations from interested parties to participate in the various levels of its structures. A small steering committee will oversee the project. The Working Group considered it would be best for NZGLS involvement at this level to be coordinated with representation of other E-government strategies.
Action: Sara to confirm EGU participation in the Steering Committee.
The bulk of the work will be done by a Project Team. The Working Group considered that NZGLS should be represented on this group. Derek Rayner agreed to represent NZGLS on the Project Team.
Action: John to nominate Derek Rayner to represent NZGLS on the Geospatial Metadata Standards Project Team.
