The Standards

RSS (RDF Site Summary)

IT strategists, solution architects and developers complying with e-GIF should take note of the RSS standard.

RSS is a format for syndicating news and the content of news-like sites, and is used by major news sites like Wired, news-oriented community sites like Slashdot, and personal weblogs. But RSS can also be used for other things. Each RSS item consists of a title, link, and brief description. While it is best known as the de-facto standard for syndicating news, RSS can also be used to post job vacancies or make changes to a website, book, database or almost any publication that can be broken down into discrete items. More information on RSS can be found at www.e.govt.nz/standards/e-gif/rss.html, including a link to the document proposing the standard www.govt.nz/standards/e-gif/rss-proposal-200408/index.html.

NZGMS (New Zealand Geospatial Metadata Standard)

Geospatial data producers and managers, data custodians and administrators, application builders, IT strategists and solution architects will all need to be aware of the New Zealand Geospatial Metadata Standard (NZGMS).

The geospatial metadata standard has been designed to consistently describe geospatial data sets. Metadata describes the content, quality, condition and other characteristics of data. So geospatial metadata is a way of classifying geospatial data. More information on the NZGMS standard can be found on the LINZ (Land Information New Zealand) website www.linz.govt.nz or at www.e.govt.nz/standards/e-gif/nzgms.html
