6 Benefits

6.1.1 Improved effectiveness: Users will only need to remember 1 password for multiple systems. Developers will be able to re-use the S.E.E. Key architecture to enable cross-agency authentication to their application.

6.1.2 Improved efficiency: Single sign on to a range of inter-agency applications reduces the expense of training staff on new authentication systems.

6.1.3 Enabling, positioning or support for other benefits: S.E.E. Key enables the use of inter-agency applications, such as S.E.E Workspace. It allows the use of controlled access to whole of government resources - for example, access to Standards New Zealand security standards.

6.1.4 Survival, or avoidance of business detriment: S.E.E. Key increases the minimum level of security on a system. It reduces the risk of password cracking.

6.1.5 Cost reductions benefit: Password problems can represent a significant proportion of a typical helpdesk's calls. Using a single password in association with a S.E.E. Key could reduce help desk calls, as users will have fewer passwords.

6.1.6 Once a larger number of digital certificates are purchased across government, existing users of PKI within government may realise savings due to quantity discounts.

6.1.7 Service enhancement benefit: Users will have fewer passwords to remember.

6.1.8 Improved production benefit: Agencies will find it easier to implement web based applications, as the authentication mechanisms will be standardised.
