Warnings from S.E.E. Mail
You are viewing an ARCHIVED page.
You may encounter warning messages from time to time as you use the S.E.E. Mail system. S.E.E. Mail warning messages fall into four major categories.
S.E.E. Messages Cannot Be Delivered
You have tried to send a message that contains the text [SEEMAIL] to an address that doesn't have S.E.E. Mail services.
Recommended action: Decide whether the security classification of the information you are sending requires SEEMAIL protection.
-
YES = send by other secure means.
-
NO = remove [SEEMAIL] from the message (and/or attachment)
NOTE: Depending upon your agency's S.E.E. Mail product, if the message was addressed to multiple people, it may have been successfully delivered to the recipients within S.E.E. Mail agencies. Your system administrator should have configured your warning message to show this.
S.E.E. Messages Via An Indirect Route
This message did not come directly from the apparent sender's agency. The confidentiality, integrity or authenticity of the message cannot be guaranteed. Possible causes of this warning include:
a. The mail may have been forwarded by a distribution (List serve) service
b. The sender is working away from their agency, and using an ISP mail account
c. Someone other than the sender may have sent the message and falsified the email address
-
Recommended action: If you have doubts about the message authenticity, verify the message contents with the sender by some other means (e.g. phone)
S.E.E. Messages From Non-S.E.E. Mail Agency
You have received a message marked [SEEMAIL] from an address that does not belong to a S.E.E. Mail agency.
Possible causes of this warning include:
-
The sender mistakenly thinks their agency has SEEMAIL, and has put [SEEMAIL] in the message and/or attachment
-
The sender has accidentally referred to the S.E.E. trigger word in the message and/or attachment
Recommended action: Verify the message with the sender
S.E.E. Messages Cannot Be Verified
The message was altered reroute. While it is possible to intercept and alter e-mail messages while they are in transit, this is extremely unlikely with S.E.E. Mail messages because of the security systems in place.
However, messages may get garbled in-transit due to communications problems and the S.E.E. Mail system will generate this warning.
Other Warnings
There are other warnings produced by the S.E.E. Mail System, but they are very rare. Typically they will recommend contacting the system administrator.
