National information infrastructure protection - Home

NIIP is focused on improving the protection of New Zealand's critical infrastructure from cyber attacks. New Zealand people and business depend on the continuing supply of various services such as power, telecommunications and health care.

Critical infrastructure includes the wires, machines, and software needed to make this happen, such as power lines and telephone exchanges. NIIP seeks to bolster the protection of this critical infrastructure from cyber-threats such as computer misuse and hacking.

The Centre for Critical Infrastructure Protection (CCIP) of the Government Communication Security Bureau (GCSB) will:

  • work with the owners of New Zealand's critical infrastructure to develop policies on dealing with cyber-threats
  • raise the owners' awareness of risks and vulnerabilities to their infrastructure systems
  • assist them with implementing prudent risk management
  • provide warnings of potential threats
