New initiative to improve access to government services
29 June 2004
Going overseas? Wouldnt it be great if you could go to one website and have access to all the different services that you require from the various government agencies to make this happen?
The portal team is currently identifying all of the different linked services that can be grouped together as part of common interactions with government. As these groups, and the separate services which link together to form them, are identified they will be added to www.govt.nz
This means that by accessing the portal, visitors will be able to find a complete checklist of related services. They will not only know which services to use and how, but will also be presented the different services in the correct sequence.
To date, service delivery in government has centered on individual agencies providing services unique to their organization, in isolation from related departments. Information made available on www.govt.nz reflects this model by connecting individual services grouped by subject to the single government agency that owns and delivers them.
In reality, government agencies are more likely to be delivering their services as components of what is in fact a larger process, beyond their own agency boundary.
As www.govt.nz is the information gateway provider to all-of-government in New Zealand, the portal is the ideal place to start to link these services together into a single, easily understandable process.
This will mean that accessing government services through the portal will be simpler, more straightforward and much less dependent upon an assumed knowledge of the internal workings of government.
