E-government strategy closely linked with State Sector review
May 2002
It has long been recognised that e-government is more about good government than good technology. In the end it is all about improved delivery of services to people, and improved performance of government agencies.
The integration of service delivery is one of the key recommendations of the recently published Report on the Review of the Centre. The Review proposed improvements in three areas: integrating service delivery across agencies; improving the alignment and addressing the fragmentation of the State sector and improving the way public servants are trained and developed. The Review also identified the need to re-evaluate the role the central agencies of government play in the future. The Governance project in the e-government strategy will examine questions in this area.
The recommendations marry neatly with the work already underway in the e-government programme. The review reinforces the need for a whole-of-government approach to service delivery, with greater cooperation between agencies. The work underway in the e-services project, enabling technologies and the whole-of-government standards developed through the e-government programme will contribute in no small way to making this happen.
